Michael Strahan accused of ‘disrespecting’ national anthem on FOX NFL Sunday broadcast

Michael Strahan, the acclaimed TV host and NFL icon, stirred up some controversy on Sunday during the NFL on FOX broadcast. As Veterans Day approached on Monday, November 11, marking the end of World War 1, FOX paid tribute to service members past and present.
The NFL on FOX show broadcasted from an aircraft carrier at Naval Base San Diego, celebrating the military presence around them. However, Strahan was observed as the sole individual who did not put his hand over his heart during the national anthem.
In a heartfelt tribute on the program, seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady expressed his respect for the military, saying: “We really honor you today in the NFL. You men and women who are serving us around the world, you’re our heroes. You have our respect. You have the best team in the world – and I’ve seen some great teams.”
Brady continued, commending the armed forces for their unparalleled teamwork: “But there’s no greater team in the world than our military and our armed forces. We admire your commitment. We admire your dedication. We admired your sacrifice. So enjoy today. We as the NFL, we honor you. We love you. And thank you so much.”
The controversy began when the cameras cut to the panel, where Strahan was standing with Rob Gronkowski and other NFL analysts. However, keen observers online noticed that Strahan was the only one who had not placed his hand on his heart as the national anthem played.
The act of respecting the anthem and the flag has been a significant topic of discussion in recent years, especially in the NFL following San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s movement of kneeling during the anthem. This silent protest against racism and police brutality was also adopted by other players in the league.
It has become a sensitive issue as critics argue it does not promote or respect America. Users on X, formerly known as Twitter, questioned whether Strahan should have placed his hand over his heart like the other members of the NFL on FOX broadcast did.
“Why does Michael Strahan not put his hand over his heart during the playing of our National Anthem? ,” one user asked. Another added: “If Michael Strahan cannot salute the American flag. As much as he has been blessed in this country, then he does not deserve to be on television.”
“Michael Strahan, standing with US military honoring Veterans Day can’t show honor and respect during the National Anthem… Wow!”, another user wrote.
Another comment said: “How come Michael Strahan failed to put his hand over his heart during the national anthem, sparking outrage as other attendees showed the customary respect.”
